This is a rock formation in Capitol Reef -- one of my favorite places to paint. The light and shadows are so dramatic, and the textures are so varied!
This was not a plein air painting, but was done later, in the studio. The effects of light were achieved by pouring the paint in transparent layers rather than applying directly with a brush.
